How do we calculate our dog insurance premiums?
Your premium is calculated when your Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance policy begins, at each policy anniversary, and also if you vary your cover. The premium for each policy period is printed on your certificate of insurance.
Dog insurance costs are based on several factors specific to your dog, including:
- Type of cover
- Options selected
- Pet’s age
- Pet’s breed
Upon renewal, we also factor in the claim history for your pet and the average cost of care for pets like yours, as well as the claims experience across all our insured pets. These factors, in addition to the changes in your pet’s risk profile, means your premium will increase from year to year.
When should you take out dog insurance cover?
The purpose of dog insurance is to help cover some of the costs of unexpected accidents and illnesses that may occur. Unfortunately, it will not cover any existing conditions your dog may have, prior to insurance or during the applicable waiting period. These are known as pre-existing conditions. Pre-existing conditions may be covered depending on the nature and experience of the condition, and some conditions are eligible for review after no signs or symptoms of the condition are present for an 18-month period – see Pre-existing condition review section in the PDS for more information. This means that the ideal time to insure your pet is as early as possible so that anything that happens in the future may be covered.
